Rita E. Barlow

Rita E. Barlow passed away on June 16 at her home in Bakersfield, California surrounded by friends and family. The cause of death was metastatic lung cancer. Ms. Barlow was born on August 5, 1930 in Sayre, Pennsylvania and moved to Nichols, New York with her parents Myrtle and Charles Barlow, and siblings William, Rodney and Mina. Ms. Barlow graduated from Nichols High School in 1948 and in 1950 married Jasper D. Rine and moved to Barton. New York where she had one son, Jasper D. Rine, Jr, in 1953. Following her husband's death in 1954, Ms. Barlow helped her parents operate Barlow's Resaurant in Nichols until it was sold in 1960. Ms. Barlow married Kenneth L. Hakes of Owego in 1956 and had two additional children, Diana Marie Hakes and Jess L. Hakes. In the 1960s and early 70s Ms. Barlow operated the Smithboro Hotel in Smithboro, New York. In 1981, Ms. Barlow sold the family home in Barton and traveled the country in an RV finally settling down in Bakersfield, California where she lived for the rest of her life, with periodic visits to see family and friends in the east. Since 1999 she resided in the Bakersfield retirement community known as Kern City, with many wonderful neighbors. She had a life-long interest in auto racing, kindled by her beloved early car, a Pontiac Super Chief. In later years she took up crocheting, making gifts for friends, family and the needy.She will be buried in Nichols Cemetery near her parents and first husband, with a grave-side service on Saturday, June 23rd at 10:30 am. The famliy requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to the American Cancer Society or your favorite charity. She is survived by her sister, Mina Belles of Barton, NY, her children Diana Tenney of Bakersfield, CA, Jess Hakes of Owego, NY, and Jasper Rine of Berkeley, CA, and by three grandchildren.
