If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever….Shirley Louise (Yaple) Mayer, 89, of Smithboro passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the Elderwood at Tioga Nursing Facility in Waverly. She was born on March 1, 1928 in Waverly, a daughter of the late Arthur and Nettie (Baird) Yaple. On December 19, 1948 she married John Leo Mayer and together they shared 58 years until his passing on July 11, 2006. For 45 years, Shirley served as the Town of Tioga Clerk, Tax Collector and Registrar. In addition, she was a bookkeeper for the towns of Tioga, Nichols, and Candor and also served as a secretary for various Town and County Boards. Shirley was a devoted member of the Smithboro United Methodist Church where she served as the church organist for over sixty years; she also taught Sunday School, served on various Chairman and Financial Committees at the Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed shopping, knitting and spending time with her family. She loved to challenge them to a game of Yahtzee. Shirley will be greatly missed by her son: Arthur (Kathy) Mayer of Barton; daughters: Beth (Carl) Biehner of Hiram, GA; Cindy (James) Strosser of Ford City, Pa; her grandchildren: Kami, Tobe and Michael Mayer, Clare and Kelly Strosser, Dustin (Christina) and John Burk and special granddaughter Annemarie (Daniel) Howland; great grandchildren: Alex, Taylor, Tanner, Camryn and Michael Mayer, Austin Stone and special great grandchildren: Jacob and Olivia Howland; her sister Ann (Yaple) Lounsbury; sister-in-law: Ella Yaple; many nieces, nephews and their families along with her caring family at Elderwood. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, her husband John Leo Mayer; brothers Robert, Lynn and Fred Yaple, Herbert Lott; sisters: Jean Judge and Gladys Campbell. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 10 - 12 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. A memorial service and celebration of her life will follow at 1 pm at the Smithboro United Methodist Church. Interment and prayers of committal will be in the Smithboro Cemetery.
