When tomorrow starts without me, try to understand, an angel came and called my name, then took me by the hand….Shirley M. (Alger) Baldwin, 81, of Nichols was called to her heavenly home and reunited with her husband, Albert on Saturday, July 25, 2009. Shirley was born on May 12, 1928, in South Waverly, PA. She was the daughter of the late Howard and Iva Belle (Morris) Alger. Shirley spent her childhood in Nichols and was a graduate of the Nichols High School Class of 1945. She was employed at J.J. Newberry's in Owego and later retired from Community Bank where she worked as a bookkeeper. She treasured the time spent with her family, enjoyed reading, sewing, taking walks and handcrafting counted cross stitch items. Shirley was a member of the Nichols United Methodist Church, the Rebekah's and served as secretary for the Nichols High School Alumni Association. She will be greatly missed by her family and her friends. Shirley is survived by her children: Deborah and Stephen Vinciguerra and Washington, NH; Denise and Raymond Deming of Winnabow, NC; Dana Baldwin and fianc Robin Relyea of Barton, NY; her siblings: Philip and Teresa Alger of Waverly, NY; Charles and Sue Alger of Nichols, NY; Kenneth and Linda Alger of West Chester, Ohio; Kathy and Richard Chilson of Odessa, NY; grandchildren: Stephanie and Jeffrey Smith of Penfield, NY; Amy and Marty Scott of Winchendon, MA; Catherine and James Gilkey of Kernersville, NC; Colleen and Kevin Rumsey of East Greenbush, NY; Carrie Chamberlain of Zelienople, Pa; Christen and Trevor Gowan of Greenfield Center, NY; Alyssa and Scott Hicks of LeRaysville, Pa; Andrew and Bonnie Baldwin of Clarkville, TN; Codie Relyea of Barton, NY; her great grandchildren: Jeremy and Adam Smith, Kaitlyn and Erin Scott, Ethan and Rachel Gilkey, Caroline and Robert Rumsey, Amelia Chamberlain, Peyton and Braylon Baldwin, Marissa Hicks; several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Albert Baldwin in October 1989 and a sister, Eileen Bennett in 1998. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of her life on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 2 pm at the Nichols United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jon Austin, officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Nichols Cemetery. A period of visitation and time of sharing memories will be held on Tuesday, from 12 noon until the time of the service at the church.
