Spencer Briggs, Sr.

Spencer Briggs, Sr., 91, of Briggs Hill Rd., Nichols passed away on Friday evening, November 14, 2008 following a period of declining health. A life long resident of Nichols, Spencer was born on March 23, 1917, a son of the late Edward L. and Grace (Wood) Briggs. He attended school in Nichols and was a veteran of the US Army where he proudly served his country during World War II. On February 11, 1940 in Sayre, Pa he married Wilma Rogers and together they celebrated 67 years of marriage until her passing on March 18, 2007. Spencer was a long time employee of the EJ Shoe Factory and later served as Town of Nichols Superintendent of Highways for twenty-four years. He was a member of the Nichols American Legion, attended many area Grange meetings and was an avid horse enthusiast. Spencer is survived by his children: Spencer (Janice) Briggs, Jr. of Nichols; Billie Floyd of Candor; Roger Briggs of Tioga Center; Kenn (Laura) Briggs; Penny Burrow all of Nichols; his grandchildren: Spencer III, Stacey, James, Irene, Roger, Samantha and Randy; eleven great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive. Spencer was predeceased by his wife Wilma; a son James Briggs; siblings: George (Lottie) Briggs; Blanch (Paul) Bensley; Carrie (George) Rich; Kate Draper; his grandchildren Cody and Tammy and a great grandson Heath. Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services and celebration of Spencer's life on Tuesday, November 18th at 1 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 South Main St., Nichols with Pastor Dan Martin of the Nichols United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment and prayers of committal will follow in the Nichols Cemetery. A period of visitation and sharing memories will be held on Tuesday from 11 am until the time of the service.
