Susan Kay Hartzel, a loving and generous woman who was passionate about her family, friends, and community, passed away on Monday afternoon, June 12, 2023, in Rochester, NY. Susan was born on November 5, 1952, in Sayre, Pennsylvania a daughter of the late Leo R. “Cork” and Madelyn L. (Hendershot) McDonald. Susan was proud to be an Athens Bulldog and a graduate of Athens High School Class of 1970.
Susan is survived by the love of her life, her husband of nearly 34 years, Jack T. Hartzel; sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Analyn Miller, and Joseph and Tabitha Hickey; her special grandchildren, Alexander, Angelica, Jasmine, and Piper; a great-granddaughter, Anais Madeline Dalton; her sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Ron Birdsall; brother and sister-in-law, Patrick "Leo" and Cindy McDonald; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her beloved puppy, Ruby. She was welcomed into heaven by her parents, Leo R. "Cork" and Madelyn L. (Hendershot) McDonald, and her sister, Joyce Catlin.
Family meant the world to Susan. Her love for her family extended to her role as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She always ensured that her family knew they were loved and supported. She treasured the time spent with her sister, shopping, enjoying lunch, and reflecting about the day’s blessings on the porch.
In addition to her devotion to her family, Susan was an excellent baker, known for her delicious banana bread and pineapple upside-down cake, which were must-haves during the holiday season. She also enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and house plants, creating beautiful spaces for her family and friends to enjoy.
Susan was an active member of her community, assisting her husband, Jack, at the VFW Post 6824 where she also served as Past President for the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Susan assisted Jack with the VVA Chapter 480 at their Annual Cat Fish Derby held in Owego. Susan was an avid "gamer" and enjoyed playing "WOW” showcasing her friendly and fun-loving nature.
As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Susan embodied this sentiment, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her. Her loving, generous, and friendly spirit will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and community.
