Theresa K. Burkhardt, 85
of Nichols
Theresa K. Burkhardt, affectionately known as Terri to her friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully at home on December 28, 2023, at the age of 85. Born on November 12, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, Terri was a beacon of love and faith throughout her life. She was the cherished daughter of the late Philip R. and Helen (Schineller) Burkhardt, and she carried forward their legacy of kindness and compassion in every endeavor.
Terri grew up in a world that was rapidly changing, but her steadfast spirit and joyful heart were constants that guided her through life. She was a proud graduate of Millbrook High School, class of 1956, and her commitment to education and personal growth was evident in all she did. Terri dedicated herself to a career of service, retiring from the Tioga County Department of Social Services after many years of faithful work. Her professional life was marked by an unwavering dedication to helping others, a value that she exemplified daily.
Beyond her career, Terri was deeply involved in her community. She served on the board of trustees for the Nichols United Methodist Church, where she also shared her musical talents in the Praise Band and choir. Her love for music was matched only by her love for her community, as she was an active member of the Nichols Tioga Lioness Club. Terri's competitive spirit shone brightly when she played adult softball, and she was a fervent supporter of the Mets and Giants, showcasing her unwavering team spirit.
Terri's kind heart extended to all of God's creatures, and her love for animals was a testament to her gentle soul. Her deep faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she found great joy and comfort in the fellowship of her prayer group. Those who knew Terri will remember her as a loving, kind, and faith-filled woman whose presence was a gift to all who crossed her path.
She is survived by a loving family that includes her caregivers, Mary Chalker and Ronnette Councilman, as well as Ronnette's daughter, Jessie. Terri's extended family includes Annette Chalker and family, Scott Chalker and family, and a cousin, Linda Thompsett and family. She was predeceased by her parents, her cousin Ritchie Thompsett, her Aunt Violet Neary, and extended family members Mike Chalker and Mary's brother Gary Bonney.
As we remember Terri, we are reminded of the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Terri's love and light will forever be a part of the many lives she touched.

Terri will be deeply missed, but the warmth of her memory will continue to inspire and comfort those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and faith will endure in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were blessed by her presence.
