Walter H. Cheely Sr.

Walter H. Cheely, Sr., 89, of Moore Hill Rd., Nichols, passed away Friday morning, May 25, 2012 following a period of declining health. Walter is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Lillian Babcock Cheely, his sons and daughter-in-law: Dennis "Randy" Cheely, John A. Cheely; Thomas and Pam Cheely; sisters Millie Moore and Carol (Paul) Hennig; grandchildren: Jennifer (Chris) Coleman, Jeremy (Laura) Cheely; Christopher (Tammy) Cheely; Archie (Allison) Cheely; great grandchildren: Abigail, Harley Mae, Wyatt, Alexander, Nathan, Christian, Shantae, Sabastian, Seren and Susan; several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. He was predeceased by his parents, John T. and Amy Cheely; his son Walter H. "Butch" Cheely, Jr., siblings: Russell, Charles, Lorraine, Kathleen, Marie, Virginia and Shirley Ann. Walter was born on October 26, 1922 in Hopewell, Va a son of the late John Thomas and Amy Cheely. He was a veteran of the US Army and proudly served his country from 1941-1962; during Korea and WWII. On Easter Sunday, April 6th, 1947 in New York City, he married Lillian Babcock. Walter was a well known and respected Locksmith, owning Cheely's Locksmith, in Owego. He was a longtime member of the Owego Moose, enjoyed watching the Yankees and completing crossword puzzles. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation and time of sharing memories on Tuesday, May 29th from 11 to 1 pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols. Funeral services will follow at 1pm with Pastor Dan Martin, officiating. Interment and prayers of committal with full military honors will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Lounsberry.
