Walter J. Smith, 88, of Hillcrest Drive, North Towanda, Pa passed away on August 13, 2011 surrounded by his family and friends at his home following a brief period of declining health. Walter was born on December 22, 1922 in Kenmore, Ohio the son of the late Herman F. and Isabelle (Smith) Smith. He was a graduate of Rome High School class of 1941. On October 10, 1942 he married L. Lucille Brown and together they celebrated 67 years of marriage. In February 1943, Walter entered into the US Army and served in action in Germany, Austria and Bavaria and non combat in the Philippines. Following an honorable discharge in 1946, Walter began working for Sylvania Electric Company as a Manufacturing Superintendant of the Tungsten Rod and Wire Operation. He retired in December 1984 following thirty-eight years of service. Walter was a life member of BPOE ELKS 1148 in Sayre. Walter was predeceased by his wife of 67 years Lucille on December 29, 2009 and is survived by a brother Richard Smith; brother-in-law Ralph Kissell; a cousin Betty Belle Rhineberge; nephews: Larry (Lois) Brown; Robert (Sharon) Brown; Dale (Marla) Smith; Daryl (Nancy) Smith; Duane (Kim) Smith; Russell Kissell; Richard (Sandra) Kissell; Nieces: Donna (Bill) Repsher; Sharon (Conrad) Winter; Sandra (Carl) Curtis; Sheila (Ray) Howe; special neighbors Donna and Ray Hoffmann; many great nieces, great nephews and their families also survive. Walter was predeceased by his wife Lucille; a sister Janice Kissell; sister-in-law: Alma Smith; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Alice and Ernest Meeker; brother-in-law: Walter Brown. Funeral Services for Walter will be held on Wednesday, August 17th at 1pm at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols with Pastor Dan Martin, officiating. Interment will follow in the Nichols Cemetery. A period of visitation and time of sharing memories will be held on Wednesday from 12 until the time of the service at the funeral chapel.
