When someone you love becomes a memory….the memory becomes a treasure ~ Surrounded by his family, Walter Merena, 89, a long time resident of Nichols, NY passed away on Monday morning, March 17, 2014 in Jupiter, Florida. Walter was born on August 15, 1924 in Excelsior, Pa a son of the late John and Anna (Dubetz) Merena. He was a graduate of Excelsior High School and received his Bachelors in teaching from Bloomsburg University. Walter proudly served his country with the US Army during WW11 at the Battle Bulge, England, Belgium France, Luxemburg and Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, he received the Victory Medal and Bronze Star . Walter retired following thirty-five years of teaching Business from Tioga Central High School. He was very active in his community and extracurricular athletics with Tioga Central High School. He was predeceased by his first wife Dorothy (Schug) Merena on October 8, 1987; and is survived by his wife Janice (Martin) Merena; his children: Marcia Merena Aldridge, Susanne Merena Biby and Michael Merena; grandchildren: Zachary Aldridge, Alexander Biby, step grandchildren Erin Biby, John Aldridge and Elizabeth Aldridge. His sister Jean Prosser and Brother Joseph Merena; several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of his life on Saturday, March 22 at 10 am at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Main St., Nichols with Deacon Michael Donovan, officiating. Interment and prayers of committal will follow in the Nichols Cemetery.
