Greta I. Torbert

June 2, 1926 - March 4, 2022

God said, “I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bales, yet gentle enough to yean lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-combed pullets, who will stop her mower for an hour to splint the broken leg of a meadow lark.” So God made a farmer. Greta I. Torbert, 95, of Owego and a resident of the Homesteads in Apalachin, passed away on Friday morning, March 4, 2022. Greta was born on June 2, 1926 in California, a daughter of the late Hein and Dorothy (Bauma) Temple. On December 6, 1946 she married James R Torbert (Russ) and together they made Southside their home and enjoyed farming. She also was a talented quilter and loved raising goats and camping during their retirement. Greta is survived by her sons: Edward (Sherry) Torbert; James Torbert; and a granddaughter Laura (Chris) Torbert Kieser; she will also be missed by her special friends and neighbors. Greta was predeceased by her parents; her husband James on July 26, 2006; her son Steve Torbert in July 2014, and brother Claus Temple. Abiding with her wishes, there will be no services. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting her guestbook at www.sutfinfuneralchapel.com. Those who wish may kindly consider a memorial donation to The Homesteads, 6 Main St., Apalachin, NY 13732 in loving memory of Greta I. Torbert.
